Up to 10 consoles can connect locally through wired LAN in Splatoon 2 [affiliate], according to a Nintendo press release. This compares to the eight consoles supported in local multiplayer.
The game’s new LAN Play feature will let 10 docked consoles be connected in a tournament-minded alternative to the previously announced connection.
However, only eight consoles will be playable with the other two in spectator mode.
“Private Battle Spectator View is a new functionality that will allow up to two people to participate in a Private Battle as cameramen to observe the eight-player battle from multiple angles.”
-Nintendo, in a statement
It’s also worth noting that Splatoon 2 will use the Switch’s forthcoming online smartphone app, which lets players “set play appointments with friends who have been added to their Nintendo Switch friend list or via their social media accounts,” according to Nintendo.
Splatoon 2 is slated to release exclusively for Nintendo Switch this summer. Before then, Nintendo will hold a “Global Testfire” from Mar. 24-26, introducing players to four new and two “remixed” weapons featured in the Wii U shooter’s sequel.
