This is the GameSentral Rewind, a daily recap of the top gaming headlines.

Nintendo Switch sells 2.74M units in under a month

Nintendo has announced that 2.74 million Switch consoles were sold worldwide in less than its first month on sale.

The figure was announced in the company’s year-end earnings release, which Nintendo called a “promising start.” Company president Tatsumi Kimishima originally expected to ship two million units in its first month.

It also revealed that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for Switch sold 2.76 million copies — 20,000 more than the actual console it runs on.

Nintendo also did mention launch game 1-2 Switch, saying only that it was “generating buzz.”

The company plans to sell 10 million Switches in the next year, alongside 35 million game sales. That will set the Switch within earshot of the Wii U’s 13.56 million lifetime sales in just over a year.

Speaking of that console, the Wii U sold 760,000 units as it ended production, alongside software sales of 14.8 million units. Zelda on Wii U sold 1.08 million units, bringing it up to 3.84 million units across all platforms.

The 3DS has had a good year, with hardware sales growing seven percent year-on-year to 7.27 million units, while software sales hit 55.08 million sales (up 14 percent from last year).

The company has also made $218 million in its foray into smart device games — well over four times as much as it made in the last financial year.
